Phipps Fall Flower Show 2012

Life has been crazy I haven't had much time to blog in the last month or really stop and think at all. Today however, I had the chance to go and visit Phipps Conservatory early in the morning and see the Fall Flower Show before it ended. Overall, the displays were very similar with the show last year but there were a few new pieces. I don't have time to go into too much detail but here are a few of the pictures that I took while I was there.

The Broderie Room.

 The Broderie Room was by far my favorite room for this show. The limited color palate of yellow, white and green helped accent the clean lines throughout the parterre garden. 

Zululand cycad.

If you have a chance to go to Phipps soon don't miss out on seeing the Zululand cycad. This is the first time this African seed plant has been blooming since 2006.

Note: when I went to Google this to find out what it is, everything online called it a zululand cycad, but the plaque at Phipps says Zuzuland cycad, somebody really messed up there...

 The biggest draw for all of the kids at Phipps is the train set with tiny town. While I was standing in front of the display taking pictures at least a dozen families with small children came and every child no fail went "oh wow" and stood awe struck watching the train. Within the the town was a model of Phipps as it would have looked in 1893 when it first opened.

Chinese dragon in the Sunken Garden. 

 A tribute to Chinese New Year was on display in the sunken garden. A large red dragon was in the middle of room among the fountains while yellow and orange flowers lined the walls and hanging plants.

The final display was probably the best this room has ever looked. There were a variety of flowers planted to mimic the coral along the ocean floor and paper fish were hanging from the ceiling as though they were swimming.

The Christmas exhibit is going to open in 3 weeks and I can't wait to see it!

Epitome of Fall

So the last room at Phipps Conservatory is the East room and I would say that this room  is the epitome of fall. It was filled of course with the required mums in all colors but also displayed pumpkins and scarecrows. In this room you can also only go in the front of the room and the rest is gated off. This is probably best since the majority of the room is a pond that streams from a little waterfall in the back right corner.

This will probably be my last fall post for the season since everyone is decorating for Christmas. Enjoy!

Spring Colors with Fall Flowers

So here is another post about the Fall Flower Show at Phipps Conservatory.

The Broderie room is what I like to think of as the wedding room since there is a sign inside that gives a contact number for anyone that wants to get married at Phipps. You can only walk in the front part of the room and look at the parterre designs that lead to the three goddess statues that are along the back wall. The official wishing well is also located in this room and for the first time I actually noticed the intricate metal working on the top which I often over look in favor of the large basket of flowers hanging from the well.
For this flower show the room was decked out in white and light purple/pink mums. I thought it was gorgeous and very bridal looking but not what I would think of as fall.

Here are some pictures so you can make decisions on whether this display is really fall or more spring.

The parterre design shape is constant in the room but what goes inside always changes.

Room All In Red

 My favorite room at Phipps Conservatory is the Sunken Garden, mainly because I like the element of water and fountains that are displayed in the middle. During the fall show this room was decorated completely with crimson red mums, again in a variety of shapes and sizes. I'd say that I've seen this room decorated better in some shows but also decorated worse, so this installation is about somewhere in the middle. Even though there wasn't a huge play on shapes and groupings of flowers I did enjoy the color that they chose.

When you first walk in you see a line of disbud mums hiding the fountains.

Fall Rainbow

Part two of my posts about the Phipps Conservatory Fall Flower Show 2011.
If you follow the path around the Palm Court to the right (as you are supposed to do) the first room you come to is the Serpentine Room. The pond and pergolas are still up from the Reusable Art exhibit but a variety of mums have been planted to form a rainbow of fall colors. The room starts with a bright yellow, then to a burnt orange and finally a deep red. The pictures below give a better idea than what I can describe.
There were a lot of people there so it was hard to get a good shot of the whole room.

Phipps Fall Flower Show 2011

The past two  Sundays I went to the Phipps Fall Flower Show, once by myself when it was super crowded  and then again with my friend Laura for  the last day of the exhibit. If you missed it then you can still see some of the mums as they transition for the Holiday display which officially starts the day after Thanksgiving. Throughout the week I am going to try to create posts about each of the rooms that was transformed for the Fall flower show.
The first room that you see when you enter is the Palm court and it was covered in light purple mums. I had never seen mums this color before so it was exciting to see something different from the standard yellow and orange that you normally see throughout the fall.

So for those of you who are still trying to hold onto the Autumn spirit, even with all of this Christmas decorating going on, this week of posts is for you!

I think this arrangement gives mum more of a formal look which they often lack.

It really bugs me how the pots of mums are not evenly spread out behind the bench; very tempted to move them.

Fall Flowers

I had the opportunity to go back home this weekend to help celebrate my niece's 4th birthday! Since Monday was a holiday Eva was off from school and came over to my parents' house where I was able to watch her. We had fun playing outside with Grandpa as he planted some more flowers and did some weeding.  The front yard is all set for fall with colorful mums and pumpkins. The leaves on the dogwood trees have also changed color and are now sporting their bright red berries.

Surprisingly the roses are starting to come back even after my mom chopped them all down.
